X-Ray imaging creates pictures of structures inside the body using a controlled amount of ionising radiation. The examination requested depends on the clinical question and the referring clinician’s instructions.
Before an X-Ray
Many routine X-Rays require little preparation, but instructions vary by examination. Bring your prescription or referral when applicable and tell the imaging team about any pregnancy possibility when relevant.
What to expect
The technologist will position the area being examined and may ask you to stay still or briefly hold your breath. The imaging itself is usually quick. Follow the instructions given on the day of your examination.
